March 27, 2025In recognition of her service and ultimate sacrifice, Barnes was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart, Navy Commendation Medal, Navy Good Conduct Medal, and National Defense Service Medal. She is laid to rest at Riverside National Cemetery in Riverside, California, and her name is inscribed on Panel S-72 of the National September 11 Memorial in New York City.

Wilson served as an Air Force officer from 1982 to 1989, working in Plans and Negotiations at RAF Mildenhall, England, and the Office of Defense Plans at the U.S. Mission to NATO in Brussels. From 1989 to 1991, she was the Director for Defense Policy and Arms Control on the National Security Council staff under President George H.W. Bush.

For his bravery and dedication, Hickman received several military honors, including the National Defense Service Medal, Purple Heart, Iraq Campaign Service Medal, Bronze Star Medal, and Good Conduct Medal. In tribute to his sacrifice, NASCAR driver Paul Menard and the No. 21 Menards/Knauf team featured Hickman’s name on their car during the 2011 Coca-Cola 600 Miles of Remembrance race.

Smith's military journey began in 1942 when he became the first African American from Iowa to join the Army Air Corps. After completing nine months of aviator training at Tuskegee Airfield in Alabama, he was commissioned in May 1943. As a member of the renowned Tuskegee Airmen, he quickly proved his capabilities during World War II, flying 133 combat missions with the 302nd Fighter Group. His aerial prowess was evident as he shot down two enemy aircraft in combat and destroyed ten more on the ground.
