In early September 1944, the 9th Infantry Division engaged in a relentless campaign from Lammersorf to Germeter, Germany. As part of the first infantry division to capture a German town, Caldwell was actively involved in the intense combat. The battalion spent nearly four days pushing through dense forest to reach Germeter. On October 13, 1944, a German counterattack involving tanks and heavy artillery inflicted severe losses. Tragically, Caldwell was killed by artillery shrapnel that day, just 11 days after his 31st birthday. G Company suffered significant casualties during the assault, with 10 killed, six wounded, and 16 reported missing.

John Banner, born Johann Banner in Stanislav, Austria, in 1910, gained fame for portraying the bumbling German prison guard “Sergeant Schultz” on the sitcom Hogan’s Heroes. The 1965 comedy, centered on U.S. soldiers held captive by Nazis during World War II, ran for six years.

Bellavia was recommended for a Medal of Honor for his actions on Nov. 10, 2004, when he risked his life rescuing a squad pinned in a building by insurgent crossfire. After putting himself in the line of fire to let the squad escape, Bellavia went back inside and killed an insurgent preparing an RPG that would have endangered both squads outside. So the squads could safely advance, he singlehandedly cleared the three-story building with his M-16 and a knife, killing three more insurgents and wounding another.

Nashville native Scotty Hasting joined the Army in 2010 as an infantryman, beginning his military journey with the 1st Infantry Division at Fort Riley, Kansas.
During his service in Afghanistan, Hasting earned both a Purple Heart and a Combat Infantry Badge. After being injured in combat, he found a new passion in archery through the U.S. Paralympic program, where he excelled.
