Pamela Dorothy Donovan

This week’s Veterans Spotlight shines on Pamela Donovan.

Pamela Dorothy Donovan was born in March 1942 in Merseyside, England, to Irish parents. In 1956, her family immigrated to the United States and settled in Brighton, Massachusetts.

She pursued nursing and religious studies across Canada, Ireland, England, and the United States, ultimately earning her nursing degree from St. Elizabeth’s Hospital School of Nursing in 1965. Motivated by a strong sense of duty and concern for the harsh realities faced by U.S. soldiers in Vietnam, she sought to contribute to the war effort. To achieve this, she became a U.S. citizen in 1967 and joined the Army Nurse Corps.

Following rigorous jungle training in 1968, Donovan was deployed to the 85th Evacuation Hospital in Qui Nhon as a second lieutenant. Just four months into her service, she contracted a rare form of pneumonia while on duty. She passed away in July 1968 in Gia Dinh province at the age of 26.

Donovan was one of eight female nurses who lost their lives during the Vietnam War. She was laid to rest at Mount Hope Cemetery in Boston, and her name is honored on Panel 53W, Line 45 of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall in Washington, D.C.
