On March 16, 1953, Bryant enlisted in the U.S. Army from Detroit, Michigan. Throughout his military career, he completed various specialized training programs, including the Jumpmaster Course, the Advanced Non-Commissioned Officer Course, and the Special Forces Airborne Course, all at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. He also attended the Long-Range Reconnaissance Patrol School in Augsburg, Germany.

With the outbreak of World War II, Greason put baseball aside and enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1943. He became one of the Montford Point Marines, a group of Black Marines who underwent segregated training at Montford Point, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. Following his training, he was assigned to the 66th Supply Platoon and took part in the Battle of Iwo Jima in 1945.

Initially trained as an avionic mechanic, Truman soon found himself aboard the troopship Tuscania, headed for Europe. However, disaster struck when a German U-boat sank the ship off the coast of Ireland. While many soldiers lost their lives, Truman survived unscathed. He was honorably discharged from the military on June 12, 1919, following the war’s conclusion.

During his service on the Polar Star, Reardon embarked on a mission to Antarctica, where the vessel helped clear a path for supply ships. While there, the crew was given 24 hours of free time to explore their surroundings. Reardon took full advantage of the experience—he and his crewmates placed pallets of beer on the ice to chill, enjoying drinks in the frigid environment while watching their fellow sailors “fish” for orca whales.

Details of Uecker’s military service are sparse, but after high school, he joined the Army in 1954. During his two years of service, he played baseball at Fort Leonard Wood in Missouri and Fort Belvoir in Virginia.
