Veteran Spotlight - Payton Onco
This week’s Veterans Spotlight shines on Payton Onco, born in Lawton, Oklahoma. After graduating from Lawton High School in 2011, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He completed his training at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot (MCRD) in San Diego, CA, and Fort Lee, VA. Following his training, he was assigned to the 8th Engineer Support Battalion at Camp Lejeune, NC.
On May 15, 2012, Onco was deployed to Afghanistan. A month into his deployment, his MRAP armored truck was struck by an improvised explosive device (IED), injuring two of his fellow Marines. Throughout his service, Onco earned several awards, including a Purple Heart, a Sea Service Deployment ribbon, and a Combat Action Ribbon. He was honorably discharged in June 2015 with the rank of corporal.
Onco's life is closely connected to his Native American heritage. As a proud member of the Kiowa Tribe of Oklahoma, he actively engages in cultural traditions, participating in the Kiowa Gourd Clan ceremony and being inducted into the Ton-kon-gah (Kiowa Black Leggings) Warrior Society. This cultural connection is significant not only for Onco but also for his family, who have been strong supporters of various Veteran support organizations.
Currently, Onco lives in South Carolina and is employed at Bridgestone.
