From Refugee to Colonel: The Remarkable Journey of Franz "Frank" Cohn
Franz "Frank" Cohn's life story is one of resilience, service, and dedication to truth. Born in August 1925 in Breslau, Germany, Cohn was raised in a nation teetering on the edge of catastrophe. As anti-Semitic violence escalated, his family made the crucial decision to flee Germany, arriving in the United States just before the infamous Kristallnacht pogrom in 1938.
A Patriot in a New Land
In 1943, just a few years after settling in his adopted homeland, Cohn was drafted into the U.S. Army. While undergoing basic training at Fort Benning, Georgia, he was sworn in as an American citizen—an act that marked the beginning of a long and distinguished military career.
Thanks to his fluency in German, Cohn was soon reassigned from his initial post with the 87th Infantry Division to a military intelligence unit. During the pivotal Battle of the Bulge and other key operations in Europe, he played a critical role by interrogating German prisoners of war, contributing vital information to the Allied war effort.
A Lifelong Commitment to Service
Cohn’s military service didn’t end with World War II. He went on to serve for 35 years, retiring in 1978 with the rank of colonel. His career spanned several high-level assignments, including roles as a military police officer and as Chief of Staff for the Military District of Washington.
His exemplary service was recognized internationally. Among his many accolades were the French Legion of Honor, Germany’s Grand Service Cross, and the prestigious Order of the Marechaussee—the U.S. Army's highest award for military police service.
Preserving Memory Through Education
After retiring from active duty, Cohn committed himself to a new mission: education. He became a devoted volunteer at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, where he shared his personal experiences of persecution, survival, and service with visitors from around the world.
Through his story, Franz Cohn reminded generations of the importance of resilience, the value of service, and the need to confront hatred with courage and truth.
