Veteran Spotlight: Don Mueller
Don Mueller proudly served in the U.S. Army from 1954 to 1957. Reflecting on his time in uniform, Don shared, “My military service taught me many lessons that benefited me in civilian life — a strong sense of responsibility, self-discipline, and the importance of keeping my commitments.”
From June 1955 to June 1957, Don was stationed in Mannheim, Germany, with the 2nd Armored Division. This was during the final year of the German occupation following World War II. As a turret artillery repairman, he worked on tanks, maintaining and repairing every part of the turret system, including removing and replacing worn gun tubes.
He was later assigned to temporary duty in the British zone of northern Germany, where he supported the 7th Army’s tank gunnery exercises. The British base was located at the former Nazi concentration camp Bergen-Belsen — an experience that left a lasting and somber impression on him.
In the fall of 1956, during the Hungarian uprising against the Soviet Union, Don’s division was placed on alert for possible deployment to the Czech border in support of Hungarian forces, though the movement was ultimately not required.
Don completed his service in 1957, retiring with the rank of Corporal. His commendations include the German Occupation Medal, Overseas Service Medal, and Good Conduct Medal.
After leaving the Army, Don went on to build a successful career as a business owner in San Luis Obispo, where he operated a retail store for many years. For the past 15 years, he has devoted his time as a volunteer with the Central Coast Veterans Memorial Museum. He is also an active member of the 2nd Armored Division Association and American Legion Post #66 in San Luis Obispo.
Thank you, Don, for your dedicated service and continued commitment to our veteran community!
