Veteran Spotlight: Honoring Dan Smee

Today, we proudly highlight the service and journey of Dan Smee, a U.S. Army veteran and California National Guard member whose dedication to his country and fellow service members continues to inspire.

Early Service in the U.S. Army

Dan began his military career in 1983 when he joined the U.S. Army as a Medical Specialist (Combat Medic). For three years, he provided critical medical support, honing the skills that would define much of his service.

Returning to Service After 9/11

The tragic events of September 11, 2001, reignited Dan’s call to serve. In 2002, he enlisted in the California National Guard, returning to his role as a medic after completing his recertification.

Deployment to Operation Iraqi Freedom

From 2004 to 2005, Dan deployed to Operation Iraqi Freedom, where his expertise as a combat medic was tested daily. He recalls the challenges of war—losing comrades, treating severe injuries, and then having to return to missions just hours later. Reflecting on his tour, Dan said:

“During the war zone tour I saw the best of humanity and the worst. You gather yourself up and prepare mentally, because the guy next to you is doing the same.”

Recognitions and Awards

Dan’s commitment and bravery earned him an Army Commendation Medal (ARCOM) for lifesaving efforts during a mission in Iraq. He also received the Parachutist Badge (Jump Wings), underscoring his versatility and skill.

Life After Service

Like many veterans, Dan faced challenges upon returning home. Finding purpose again, he pursued higher education, graduating from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, and later earning a Master’s in Social Work from USC. Today, he serves fellow veterans as a social worker with the Department of Veterans Affairs, while staying connected to his Central Coast community.

Continuing to Give Back

Dan is also an alumnus and volunteer with the Wounded Warrior Project, attends reunions with combat comrades, and remains active in veteran support groups online. His experiences deeply shaped him, but he continues to live by Army core values and leadership principles.

Inspired by Sacrifice

Carrying the lessons of his service, Dan lives each day honoring those who did not make it home:

“The sacrifices I witnessed on the battlefield inspire me to continue with my life in memory of those who made the ultimate sacrifice.”

We honor and thank Dan for his service, sacrifice, and continued dedication to veterans and his community.
