This week’s Veterans Spotlight shines on Albert Tristan.
Albert Flores Tristan, an Army veteran, was born in March 1949 in Dallas, Texas. Originally from Mexico, he immigrated to the United States in 1955 at the age of six. He graduated from North Dallas High School in 1968 and continued living in Texas until he enlisted in the U.S. Army in September 1969 during the Vietnam War. He served as an infantry specialist in Quang Ngai Province, South Vietnam.
Tristan was assigned to A Company, 3rd Battalion, 11th Light Infantry Brigade, 1st Infantry. Tragically, in July 1970, he was killed in action at the age of 21 due to enemy engagement. His bravery and sacrifice were honored with nine military decorations, including the Purple Heart, the Silver Star, and the National Defense Service Medal.
He was laid to rest at Restland Memorial Park in Dallas, and his name is etched on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. (Panel 09W, Line 125). On May 26, 2022, his legacy was remembered during the Coca-Cola 600 in Concord, North Carolina, as part of a Military Appreciation Month tribute recognizing the service and sacrifice of U.S. military personnel and their families.
