Castellated impact sockets are used with impact power tools to tighten and loosen a castellated nut, also known as a castle nut. The nut has notches cut into one end and it is twisted onto a threaded bolt with a hole drilled into it. After the castellated nut is tightened to the correct torque, a cotter pin is passed through the hole in the threaded bolt and between the notches in the castle nut to secure the nut from turning.
