They can accomplish more milling tasks than single-end corner-rounding end mills before they need to be replaced. When the cutting edges on one end wear down, the end mill can be flipped over to expose the fresh cutting edges on the other end. End mills with a straight shank install into a chuck, collet, or heat-shrink toolholder on a milling machine.

Corner-rounding end mills have concave cutting edges on their nose that create a rounded outside edge on a workpiece. They are used to ease and shape sharp outside corners on a workpiece.
