Self-retracting cord reels have a spring mechanism that automatically winds the cord back on the reel, making them easier to use than hand-winding cord reels. A stop, or ratchet, holds the cord at the desired length after it's pulled out for use. A quick tug on the cord disengages the stop, causing the spring to fully retract the cord. These reels provide access and storage of extension cords while protecting the cord from wear, tangling, and kinking.

Standard cord reels are spools that hold extension cords to provide access and storage while protecting them from tangling, kinking, and other damage. The cord can be extended to exactly the length needed to power equipment located at a distance from a power source. Self-retracting and motor-driven cord reels automatically wind extended cord back on the reel, while hand-winding cord reels have a handle or knob for winding the cord manually.
